Large contract awarded for medical center MEP engineering

EMCOR Group has been awarded the MEP engineering contract for the UCSD's Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, with final construction to be completed in 2010.

Last fall, University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center broke ground for the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, a new 128,000-sq.-ft facility that includes an expansion of patient care areas of UCSD’s Thornton Hospital. The project will unify UCSD’s ambulatory, clinical, and inpatient heart and stroke care in one convenient location with construction completion expected in 2010.

On July 1, EMCOR Group Inc., a mechanical and electrical construction company that provides energy infrastructure and facilities services for a diverse range of businesses, announced that its Dynalectric Co. and University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors Inc. (UMEC) subsidiaries have been awarded contracts to provide the entire electrical and mechanical infrastructure for the UCSD Medical Center’s Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, consisting of a new four-story structure with two interstitial floors.

Dynalectric will provide all electrical systems for the facility including those for its fire alarm safety system, nurse call center, and security and telecommunications and systems. UMEC will provide the HVAC, including air handlers that deliver more than 200,000 cfm, and plumbing systems for the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center.

Conceptualized by architects RTKL Associates of Los Angeles, the Center’s “jewel-box” inspired glass design carefully integrates more than 20 examination rooms, four cardiac catheterization labs, four cardiac-sized operating rooms sized to accommodate complex cardiac cases, 24 intensive care and intermediate care beds, expanded imaging labs, enhanced clinical research facilities, and an expanded Emergency Department with a total of 18 private exam stations.
