Commonwealth Edison and Ameren are about to kick off an ambitious energy-conservation program for commercial and industrial customers of electricity.

According to a story in the Chicago Tribune, last year the legislature took on the task of dealing with sharply higher electricity prices. With the backing of environmentalists, they also established goals for energy efficiency.

In early June, Commonwealth Edison will unveil a multiyear effort to encourage the wise use of electricity. It includes rebates for commercial and industrial customers that install electricity-saving equipment or lighting, and eventually is expected to help retrofit some older, less efficient buildings.
